Guerilla Eye Services

The Guerilla Eye Service is a mobile eye care clinic and non-profit organization that will provide high quality eye care to individuals who have certain barriers to care. The Guerilla Eye Service will provide their services at Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC’s).  In addition, medical trainees, such as medical students and residents, are educated through the program by being given the opportunity to perform the eye exams.

The Guerilla Eye Service provides service at Birmingham Free Health Care Clinic, Canterbury Place, Catholic Charities Free Health Clinic, Cornerstone Care, Squirrel Hill Health Center, East End Health Clinic, McKeesport Health Clinic, Majesty Care Clinic, and Verland, all Federally Qualified Health Centers.  New locations are being added each year. Additionally, the Guerrilla Eye Service frequently takes part in community sponsored screening events for children, veterans, etc. and also participate in providing workshops sponsored by the medical school that introduce high school students to various health care professions.

Student expectations for credit: Students are expected to participate in the equivalent of four half-day eye clinics/missions (some clinics run for a full day, e.g. 8am to 4/5pm, and would count as two half day clinics). Participation includes performing eye-focused History and Physical examinations, presenting patients to the residents and lead attending present, as well as taking part in discussions with patients about plans for future care.
