Service-learning Activities

In order for community service activities to qualify as service-learning, they should meet the following criteria:

  1. The activity has appropriate learning objective(s) that is realistic and supports curricular objectives
  2. Students have appropriate preparatory guidance (reading, videos, prerequisites, etc.)
  3. Students have appropriate post-activity reflection (discussion, journaling, etc.)

Faculty who sponsor volunteer activities are invited to “enhance” them by tying them to learning objectives and providing preparation and reflection opportunities for students.  Interested faculty should submit a proposal to the Curriculum Committee Executive Subcommittee to certify appropriateness based on the above basic standards.

Students can receive credits for these service learning (SL) activities as part of the Community Service Certificate.  All current activities certified for CE credits are considered service-learning.
